Pre-race storylines[edit | edit source]
In a surprising announcement, the controversial Calton-Morel Altair of Hodges-Walter Racing was declared legal, despite many insiders believing that the cars would be declared illegal and disqualified from the first three races. For now, Adrien Devereux's points lead remains intact.
Hodges-Walter Racing was warned that the cars were dangerously close to the weight limit after Carbondale, but Alan Hodges stated that his cars were built with the expectation being that his two drivers would be two pounds heavier. Carl Walter echoed those sentiments. "I sat down with Sam Morel and the rest of our engineering team and we went over the rules to the letter. We knew our interpretation was correct." Hodges stated. "It's a more clever interpretation than what the other teams have implemented. It's that simple."
The decision to uphold the legality of the Calton-Morel Altair was met with protest, as FLASH Racing, Team Saar USA, Mitchell & Sons Racing, BlackDiamond Racing, Majestic Motorsports, and Scuderia Tutino filed a joint appeal of the outcome. Xenos Racing reportedly intended to appeal as well but did not get the paperwork in on time. The appeal will be heard at an unspecified date.
