Championship Overview

The 2018 Buckeye Association for Auto Racing Super Pro Series season is the 22nd season of the premier late model series in the Ohio Valley region of the United States.

Pre-season Notes[edit | edit source]

A large majority of the well known teams and drivers will return in 2018. The Super Pro schedule remains at 12 races. The BAAR Super Pro Triple Crown returns in 2018, with Columbus and Mosport retaining their spots. The BAAR Final Battle will be moved to Eldora Speedway for the 2nd running, and will be extended to 200 laps this year.

AAA will be the title sponsor of the Rookie of the Year award for the third straight year.

Qualifying[edit | edit source]

In the off-season, BAAR officials decided to scrap the Fast Twenty Qualifying format. Instead, if a track has enough pit stalls to hold all the cars entered, then all cars will participate in the race. If not, then time trial qualifying will be held, with each driver getting five laps to qualify. For those who do not qualify, wherever their final time places them will be considered their 'finishing position' for the race, and will be awarded points accordingly under the new points system.

Triple Crown Stage Format[edit | edit source]

Replacing the segment format in 2018, the Triple Crown events will feature three stages of racing. The first two stages will be short and of equal length, with the third stage making up the remainder of the race (Mosport 10/10/25, Ohio 300 75/75/150, Eldora 50/50/100). At the end of each stage, the top ten will receive bonus points based on where they finish.

Grace Laps Rule[edit | edit source]

The Grace Laps rule returns in 2018, with each driver receiving three grace laps at the start of the race, with two bonus laps awarded if they win one of the first two stages. If a driver falls laps down at the end of a stage, they can redeem their grace laps in order to return to the lead lap for the start of the next stage. However, if a driver is laps down and does not have enough grace laps to cover the difference, they will be eliminated from the race.

Green-White-Checkered[edit | edit source]

The Green-White-Checkered rule returns for the Triple Crown events, and the Grace Laps Rule will be applied at the end of the third stage should the race go to a GWC. There will be unlimited attempts for the GWC once again in 2018.

Schedule Notes[edit | edit source]

The schedule is comprised almost entirely of short tracks. The only road course race on the schedule will be at Mosport for the sixth running of the Memorial. The series will return to a 1 mile oval for the first time since 2014 when they visit the I-69 Speedway in Port Huron, Michigan.
