TM Canon Driver |
Dan Richards (born April 7, 1979 in Huntsville, Alabama) is an American race car driver who currently competes in TM Lights driving the #133 Lenard for EV Racing. He won the 2012 American Stock Car Championship season driving for Ocean Motorsports over Tony Durbin in an electrifying battle, and won the chaotic and dramatic 2012 Rockford 200 driving for Team Thunder.
Early Career[edit | edit source]
Dan Richards began racing at local short tracks in Alabama during the mid-1990's as a hobbyist. After winning two track championships at the Huntsville Speedway in 2000 and 2003, he began to participate in regional and larger-scale races, ultimately culminating in a full attempt at a national Late Model championship in 2007. His big break came in 2010, when he won three straight races and attracted the attention of Team Thunder, who enlisted him in their development program.
2011[edit | edit source]
Richards made his first mark in the ARLA Elite Series, when he was listed as the reserve driver for Bill Tissom at the 2011 150 Laps of Dwyer. Unfortunately, the car did not qualify for the race. Richards made one more attempt that year at the 2011 Rockford 200 driving the 07T for Team Thunder. He won the pole in his heat race, but lacked race pace and failed to advance out of his heat to either of the mains.
2012[edit | edit source]
ASCC[edit | edit source]
Despite his inexperience, Richards was picked up by Ocean Motorsports to drive the #39 Extenze Lenard for the 2012 American Stock Car Championship season. Despite a slow start in the season, Richards began to pick up the pace during the mid-season, culminating with at win in the 2012 Old School 200. Richards qualified for the Chase, and through a string of incredibly consistent finishes as well as through the misfortunes of his competitors, he won the 2012 ASCC Championship at the 2012 Lenard 225 over Tony Durbin.
ARLA[edit | edit source]
After the departure of Bill Tissom from Team Thunder after the 2012 Orange County 200, Dan Richards was picked up as a replacement driver. After two mid-pack runs at New York Autoring and Talladega, Richards put forth the run of his life, triumphing and taking the victory in the 2012 Rockford 200, Team Thunder's third victory of the season.
2013[edit | edit source]
After winning both the ASCC Championship and the Rockford 200 in the same year, Richards made the jump up to TM Lights driving for EV Racing. Rumors indicated that his Lenard connections got him the ride, but his performances in 2012 are suspected to be the reason he got the ride.
