Fred Jones is a retired American auto racing driver from Somerville, Massachusetts.

Jones is a two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500. He is also one of the winningest drivers in TM Master Cup history, having scored 50 race victories over the duration of his 10-year career.

Career[edit | edit source]

V8 Champ Car[edit | edit source]

Jones won the Indianapolis 500 in 1989.

After transitioning to stock cars and becoming a full-time TM Master Cup driver, Jones became the first person to attempt The Double, when in 1995 he started both the Indianapolis 500 and the Memorial Day weekend Master Cup race. Despite the logistical and physical challenges inherent in contesting both races, Jones won at Indianapolis to earn his second 500 victory.

TM Master Cup[edit | edit source]

Jones' first TM Master Cup start was at Daytona International Speedway for the season-opening race in 1994. He would contest the full season as a Rookie of the Year candidate, and continued to compete in the series full-time through the conclusion of 2003.

Jones was among the most successful competitors of his era, and became one of the winningest drivers in Master Cup history. He earned 50 race victories in total, and holds the record for the fewest number of starts to achieve 50 wins.

Despite this success, Jones never won the Master Cup drivers' championship. He ranked runner-up in the standings multiple times.

The team for which Jones raced shut down following the conclusion of the 2003 season. Jones elected not to consider any offers to driver for another organization and retired from racing, deciding to focus instead on spending more time at home and with his family.

Personal[edit | edit source]

Jones is the father of Fred Jones, Jr., who is also a racing driver.
