Pre-race storylines[edit | edit source]

The 2012 Rockford 200 will feature a 30-car starting field, the largest in the race's history. Only three drivers, Ebenezer Quiggles, Jr., Rip Tyler, and Yevgeny Kuznetsov, are locked into the race, as they are the only drivers mathematically eligible for the title. Laura Cyrus can also win the championship, but must make one of the B-mains and wins it. In that scenario, she can win the title if she finishes in second in the 200 while everyone in front of her in the points fails to finish.

ARLA also implemented an "overtime" rule effective this race: under the "overtime" rule, if a race is projected to end under yellow, the race will immediately be red-flagged and teams will be given 10 minutes to repair cosmetic damage to their cars. Lapped cars will be moved to the back of the field, and the race will then be restarted with two laps remaining.

If the yellow flag flies before the white flag, the race will be restarted as many times as is necessary to ensure a green-flag finish. If the yellow flag flies after the leaders begin the final lap, they will be allowed to race back to the checkered flag.

RUS Autosport was originally slated to bring two cars to the track, the No. 82 of Kuznetsov and the No. 88 of Lev Azarov. At literally the last minute, the team added two more entries: the No. 89 of Radomir Stanoytchev and the No. 83 of Leonid Chernov. While this maneuver was seen by some as an attempt to ruin Quiggles' chances at the title, team owner Vitaly Tsolikov claimed he wanted to give Stanoytchev and Chernov more track time.

Kuznetsov was asked about the change in plans.

"I think, is good that RUS Autosport bring three teammate to track! Make me feel at home, race with drivers from near homeland. Azarov is like brother to me, but he not like talk much. Radomir bring lot of money to team but back up money with track result, and Chernov was compete against me in early year Formula RUS. Though, I hear Team Boss Vitaly not happy with only four car in race, he say he want to enter 20 car (sic) to track. I not know why he wanting to do this, series not called Russian Elite Series of ARLA, is American Elite Series of ARLA!"
