Charles (Chuck) James Johnson, Jr. (born June 30, 1985 in Darlington, SC) is an American race car driver currently running full time in the TM Master Cup Series, driving the #32 CalUrsa Saar for Hastert Racing.

He won the 2016 Lowe Dollar Series championship, winning the first ever (and likely only) FARC-Off playoffs.

History[edit | edit source]

Beginnings: The Struggle to Break Out[edit | edit source]

Johnson's father, Charles Johnson, Sr., is the owner of a small racing parts distributor, which supplied parts to many local short track teams in his native South Carolina. So naturally, Johnson was around racing his whole life. After supplying parts to race teams for many years, Johnson, Sr. felt the urge to start his own team with the purpose of getting his children into racing. In 2000, when Johnson was 15 years old, Johnson, Sr. formed Johnson Family Racing. He purchased a late model and the younger Johnson began racing at the Florence Motor Speedway, twenty minutes from his hometown of Darlington. Although he was a racing fan, Johnson didn't really aspire to have career as a driver growing up. However, he didn't oppose it and went along with his father's plan.

As it turned out, racing came naturally to Johnson. He earned his first win within his first year, and in the following year, wins kept racking up. By the time he was 20, Johnson had accumulated 15 wins in a four year span. He eventually traveled and won on many short tracks across South Carolina, that many short track enthusiasts believed the Johnson would make it to the big leagues. However, Johnson had no funding outside of his father's supply shop and couldn't really afford to go anywhere outside of the state without it putting a financial strain on the team, and his father's business. Some conspiracy theories claim that Johnson's father purposely kept him local in order to help his business.

First Opportunity: ARLA/FARC Truck Series (2013-2014)[edit | edit source]

After years of touring short tracks in South Carolina, Johnson Family Racing managed to pool enough resources for Johnson to run in the ARLA Tornado Alley Truck Series in 2013. This would be the first opportunity for Johnson outside of the local level.
