The 2012 Hanmore World Championships was the final race of the 2012 Formula Overdrive Season, and advertised as the premiere event on the Formula Overdrive calendar, complete with a staggering prize of $10,000,000 to the winning team.

Presenting sponsor Hanmore encouraged drivers from other racing series to enter and compete for the prize. Among the names that entered the race were Rush McCloud, Tyson Lautenschlager, Greg Woodard, Cameron Taylor, Vijay Pushanda, Ryan Griffin, Daniel Leckliter, Trey Ashby, Tiffany Matthews, Leslie Riggs, and Ashley Tucker. Packer Carroll, Tom Delgado and Jacob Eichholtz originally intended to compete, but withdrew their entries as the weekend approached; a wise decision by them, in retrospect.

The race will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the worst tragedies in the history of motorsports, as Cody Keaton, Gordon Sting, Tiffany Matthews, Tyson Lautenschlager, and Peter Kreamer were killed in accidents during the event.

After the race, officials decided to scrap the results and final points tallies and reverted to the points after Mayville as the final championship result. Lukas Schmitt, however, will still be credited with the victory.
