Pre-race storylines[edit | edit source]
The two remaining Xenos Racing cars of Robert Dorian and Leigh Gruell arrived at the track painted solid black, with the sponsor decals still in place – in memory of fellow driver Scott Hamilton, who passed away at Brazil.
Drivers Jacques Bouvier and Carlos Donzelo, who were also injured in the crash that took Hamilton's life, did not take part in this event. Bouvier will be replaced by Canadian TM Lights driver Jacob Kard, while independent driver Alexey Stoyanovich took over the No. 75 in relief of Donzelo.
Terra International Motorsports announced that its team members would wear black armbands on their uniforms and race suits with the number 46 in Hamilton's memory for this race, regardless of whether or not the team got anyone in the race. The team also sent condolence packages to the family, friends, and teammates of Hamilton.
Leonid Roderick showed up to Decatur with his usual racing gear, orange firesuit and blue gloves that he has become known for. However, the "flaming meteorite" helmet design that Roderick has used for most of his career was notably absent. In its place was the design used by Hamilton for his top-level career. The helmet design, which depicts a tropical scene, was based off of a photo taken at Hamilton's wedding in late 2008. Hamilton's widow, Natalie, and father, Roger, are guests of FLASH Racing for the race. Natalie Hamilton has been to all TM Master Cup Series races this year, where she has been a part of the pre-race show for Channel 44.
Qualifying[edit | edit source]
- For coverage of the qualifying races, please see 2011 Round of Decatur qualifying races.
As in Indianapolis and Karjala, a multi-level qualifying process set the grid for the race. Time trials would set the first five rows, with qualifying races determining the balance of the field.
Chris Johaanes and Luciano Soveral made up the front row, with Vladimir Simonov and one-off entrant Ben Atkins timing in the second row. Arto Kekkonen was the last driver to time his way into the field in the first round.
Ian Cooper, Jacob Eichholtz, and Leonid Roderick were the fastest cars of the second round, as each posted a time faster than the pole time of Johaanes. But, since this was the second round, Cooper's time was good for the third row, with Eichholtz and Roderick comprising Row 4.
The last two cars to time into the field were the No. 500 one-off entry of Gordon Kim and fellow one-off entrant Cesar Vila Nova.
